TV Antenna Compass USA is an app designed for iPhone users in the United States to assist in positioning outdoor TV antennas accurately. To get started, users input a US address into the app. Upon hitting the search button, the application analyzes the address data. Subsequently, it reveals a tower map overlaid with an antenna pointer icon and provides a compass heading on the phone's screen footer.
Furthermore, a hamburger menu icon within the interface expands to exhibit a menu tree. This tree offers several options such as accessing lists of channels and broadcast tower information, predicted signal strengths per channel, compass headings (in degrees) for each channel, and distances from the entered address to respective broadcast towers.
If the magnetic compass heading necessary for pointing the antenna is already known, simply input the address and utilize the compass feature by aligning your iPhone's front with the antenna's front. Ensuring a minimum distance of 12" between the phone and the antenna helps prevent metal interference with the phone's internal compass.
For those unsure of the direction to point their antenna, referring to channel and tower details in the menu becomes essential. Most outdoor antennas are directional. Hence, users should identify all major broadcast towers in close proximity and direct their antennas towards the weakest channels.
In scenarios where broadcast towers span multiple directions and a directional antenna is in use, opting for locations with optimal signal strength across major networks is recommended. Alternatively, consider utilizing an omni-directional antenna (bearing in mind potential signal trade-offs) or an antenna rotator for varied pointing needs. In rare cases, combining antennas directed diversely may prove challenging due to location-based limitations.
Generally, most US locales feature major network broadcast towers centrally located, simplifying reception with a quality directional antenna. App projections presuppose outdoor directional antenna placement at 15-20' above ground level to minimize interference from nearby structures. However, these recommendations are inapplicable to indoor or attic-installed antennas.
Although TV Antenna Compass USA can aid in antenna alignment effectively, users should note that its forecasts are usually conservative. Actual reception might yield more channels or robust signal strengths under certain circumstances. Environmental and geographical factors not factored into app algorithms can occasionally render data inaccurate. It's advisable to view app output as a rough estimate due to numerous variables influencing final signal quality and channel availability.
